Chris S. Zubof has been asked by the American Society of Training and Development to serve on its 2001 ASTD Excellence in Practice (EIP) Awards Expert Review Committee. The role of trhe committee is to review nominations made to ASTD for outstanding practices in areas relating to training, workplace learning and performance improvement.

Dr. Leslie S. Stratton, Dr. Dennis O'Toole and Dr. James N. Wetzel, Economics Dept., have been notified that their paper "Factors Affecting Part-Time College Enrollment Within the First Year" has been selected as the winner of the Charles F. Elton Best Paper Award by the Association for Institutional Research.

Dr. Leslie S. Stratton, Economics Dept. and Joni Hersch have been notified that their paper "Household Specialization and the Male Marriage Wage Premium" in the Industrial and Labor Relations Review 54(1) has been selected as one of the top 20 articles published in 2000 on Work-Family Research. Over 400 published articles in 36 leading journals competed for the award.

Dr. Ruth W. Epps, H. HassabElnaby and Ph.D. student Amal A. Said, Accounting, for receipt of "Best Paper" Award in the accounting track at the 2001 annual meeting of the Southeastern Chapter of the Institute of Operations Research and Management Sciences. Their paper was entitled "An Empirical Investigation of the Relationship Between Accounting Development & Environmental Factors: Longitudinal Intra-Country Evidence.

First RIMS Scholarship Awarded

For the first time the Virginia Chapter of Risk and Insurance Management Society, Inc. RIMS) has awarded a $2,500 scholarship to a rising senior majoring in the Insurance/Risk Management field of study. The recipient is Sharon G. Verry, who is an active member of the society's Gamma Iota Sigma.fraternity and other RIMS programs. Recently she attended the National RIMS Annual Convention in Atlanta, GA and will be RIMS' guest at the Virginia and Potomac RIMS regional conference in October 2001.

The publication is distributed to global business investors.

August 30 Dr. Urban’s Letter to the Editor led off the column in The Wall Street Journal. He expressed his thoughts on video teaching as a follow-up to an earlier article that appeared in the publication. He closed with the reminder that “in the new model of higher education, professors have to make it worthwhile for students to come to class. Otherwise, they have only themselves to blame for the empty seats in the lecture hall.”

“The MBA Is Back” by Sean Ryan in Inside Business on August 27. Although the story focuses on the MBA in general, the comments and photograph of Robyn Dorsey, part-time VCU MBA, serve as an influential third party endorsement.
