Graduate Business Students Consult The Experts About Careers

School of Business More The School of Business Graduate Studies in Business is cleverly telling the world about changes in their MBA program. The creation of BuzNet is one addition to the program

By Mary C. O’Rourke

Graduate business students turned out to consult the experts in discovering their next career!

BuzNet, the Graduate Studies in Business (GSIB) Networking Group, hosted the Spring Employer Information Series over three evenings in February.  Influential representatives from Genworth Financial, Philip Morris, Virginia Department of Human Resources Management, Virginia Housing Development Authority, and Wachovia Securities shared with students news about the latest developments in their industries and companies, as well as how to land a job with their firm!

Jerome Waller, Asset Retention Finance Leader, Genworth, shared one of his favorite interview questions:  “How much does a 747 weigh?”. The point of the question is not to assess interviewees’ working knowledge of commercial aircraft, but to judge how well interviewees’ tackle challenging questions.  Mr. Waller is looking for candidates that show initiative and do not shy away from tough problems even if they don’t have a clue how much a 747 weighs.

Representatives from the Virginia Department of Human Resources Management and the Virginia Housing Development Authority clued students into the fact that a large percentage of state workers are nearing retirement.  State agencies are working hard to build comprehensive succession plans to capture the knowledge of their aging workforce.  This fact also means that many agencies are looking to recruit bright and energetic business students to introduce new perspectives.

Each participating company is actively recruiting summer interns as well as full-time positions for graduate and undergraduate students.  Interested students are urged to check out their Web sites.  For more information on how to advance your professional and academic career through networking, contact Dave Pace, BuzNet President, pacedm@vcu.edu .
