FEATURE STORIES
GRADUATION!
Congratulations to the 595 graduates who earned
degrees from School of Business in August, December, or May of this school year. Degrees
conferred included 441 bachelors degrees, 146 masters degrees, and
8 doctorates. Post-baccalaureate certificates were also awarded. Roger
L. Gregory, the first African-American to be appointed to the 4th U.S. Circuit
Court of Appeals last year, spoke to graduates at a commencement ceremony on
Saturday, May 17. Thomas G. Snead, Jr., '96, President of Anthem Blue Cross
and Blue Shield, Southeast Region and an alumnus of the Accounting Department,
addressed School of Business graduates at a special diploma ceremony later that
afternoon. Highlighting the lessons he learned growing up on a tobacco
farm and as a student at VCU, as well as those he's learned since, Tom encouraged
graduates to follow their passions, do the right thing, cherish their families,
and support their communities. Of special
note was a Richmond Times Dispatch profile of School of Business graduate
Pamela Marie Curtis and her family. Pamela majored in finance and made
a daily 40-mile round-trip commute from her home in New Kent County to attend
classes.
SHRM GETS
UNDERWAY
The School of Business Center for Corporate
Education presented certificates to thirteen Society of Human Resources Management
(SHRM) graduates this spring, and will offer a new fall series with orientation
on August 26 and classes beginning September 8 & 9. The SHRM Learning
System is directed to human resource professionals at both beginning and advanced
levels. More information is
available online at http://www.bus.vcu.edu/cce .
ETHICS SYMPOSIUM
INCREASES AWARENESS
Prior to the annual Better Business Bureau's
Torch Award ceremony May 1, Dean Michael Sesnowitz organized the third ethics
symposium to bring greater awareness and understanding of business ethics to
students and business leaders. The School of Business and the Better Business
Bureau of Central Virginia jointly
sponsor the symposium. Ethics expert Jeffery Seglin, professor at Emerson
College, moderated a panel that included David Fields, Jr., a VCU master's student
in Information Systems and Wally Stettinius, senior executive fellow at the School
of Business. Many of the topics discussed were reported the following day
by Carol Hazard in the Richmond Times Dispatch. Of special interest
were the discussions among students and businesses on
developing an ethical reputation.
TWO PROFESSORS PROMOTED
The School of Business promoted two faculty members this spring. Dr.
Jayaraman Vijayakumar achieved the rank of associate professor in the Department
of Accounting, and Dr. Michael McDaniel earned the rank of professor in the Department
of Management.
Dr. Vijayakumar joined the accounting department
in 1997. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and served
at Georgia State University and the Indian Revenue Service in India prior to
joining VCU. Dr. Vijayakumar's research interests focus on the tax-exempt
bond market and issues related to insider trading. He has published in journals
such as the Journal of Accounting and Public Policy; Journal of Accounting,
Auditing, and Finance; and Journal of Financial Services
Research. Dr. Vijayakumar is currently the Research Program coordinator
for the Government and Nonprofit Section of the American Accounting
Association.
Dr. McDaniel has won numerous research and
teaching awards over his past 5 years with the School of Business. He has published
in Academy of Management Journal, Journal of
Applied Psychology, and Applied Measurement Methods in Industrial Psychology. He
also does consulting, designing and testing through his own company located in
Richmond.
TEACHING WITH TECHNOLOGY
Four times a year the School of Business Technology Resource Committee
meets to review faculty needs in classrooms, offices, and for research. The
impact of budget cuts was more profound than in preceding years, affecting the
routine technology replacement plans and addition of supplemental resources for
faculty, staff and students. Despite the cuts, an assessment survey completed
last year reflected the faculty's satisfaction with the technology provided for
teaching and research purposes. The School of Business maintains two open
labs for students and two lab classrooms, as well as
separate IS Department labs. All new computers and faculty replacement
computers are now being configured with flat panels.
TECH INTRO NOW ONLINE
Many alumni remember the INFO160 series as one
credit, 5 week, instructor-led courses. No more! The new INFO16X@VCU program
administered by Wilma Andrews is offered online, is self-paced, and is
pass/fail. Rolling enrollment during the semester enables students to add
additional courses after the official drop/add date. On-site exams are
required. The new program generated 1093 credits during the 2002/2003 academic
year. Students achieved an 80 percent pass level. Five courses are
presently offered, allowing students to move from Intro to Windows and the Internet
to word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentations. Other courses
using the online model are being considered for future
offerings.
THREE FACULTY
RETIRE
Ice cream sundaes flavored with many good
wishes celebrated the retirements of three School of Business
faculty members:
Dr. Jerry T. Ferguson, professor of Real
Estate in the FIRE Department, came to VCU in 1965 and specializes in real estate
principles, brokerage and finances. He has published over 60 articles in scholarly
and practitioner journals and has authored and co-authored eight real estate
textbooks. He served as a consultant on establishing real estate programs
in two state universities and on rehabilitation of urban neighborhoods for both
the State of Virginia and the
Realtors Association.
Dr. F. Paul Fuhs, professor of Information Systems, brought object-oriented
analysis, design and programming into the curriculum of the IS Department in
the early 1990s and has been the primary agent in getting the undergraduate IS
program centered around object-oriented technology. Dr. Fuhs plays an important
role in overseeing curriculum changes for Information Systems and serves as advisor
to all undergraduate IS majors. He is an active member of the Faculty Advisory
Board of the Information Systems Research
Institute (ISRI). During 1994-95, Dr. Fuhs served as a member of the School
of Business Faculty Council whose primary task was the school's
re-organization.
Edwin E. Blanks is Vice Provost for Academic
Administration and will retire September 1. He has been with VCU since 1965 and
has had a long association with the Information Systems department in the School
of Business. He has taught information technology courses in the School
of Business and was Associate Dean for Administration prior to assuming his current
position in the Provost's
office. Mr. Blanks has written and co-authored numerous journal articles
on computing and information systems and given presentations on technology topics
throughout the U.S. and Canada. He installed the first computer system
(Honeywell 200) at RPI in 1966. He also directed computing during the
1968 merger of the two campuses and later the merger of computing with the community
college system. In his current position he is responsible for budgetary
and financial operations including faculty salary administration and Institutional
Research and Evaluation (IRE). IRE is responsible for university external
reporting, studies and data analysis and peer studies. During his academic
career, he has chaired over 200 academic and
administrative committees. He also is a former President of the Greater
Richmond Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association and continues as an adviser to
their board.
