SPEAKING OF WORK: Reader input helped fuel 10 years of columns
WALLACE JOHNSTON
TIMES-DISPATCH COLUMNIST |
Feb 5, 2007 |
Back in the spring, I announced that I had been diagnosed with lung cancer.
The plan at the time was to continue the columns with the assistance of all available medicines. My energy level is disappearing and there are no medicines that will lead to maintaining the current status or cause a decline in the cancer growth. It is now time to cease writing the columns.
With the help and insights of Randy Sleeth and Wayne Slough, we were able to meet all the deadlines. They were most helpful and their efforts, I hope, were appreciated by readers. As a matter of fact, the number of e-mails and comments, positive and negative, did not decrease. But my stamina has reached a point that does not allow me to continue my contributions.
I said in the beginning that I would keep to my long-term belief that success comes from working toward a target. That mind-set, under the circumstances, was based on my having the energy level to keep the columns on target and on time. And I do not.
I will miss reader comments about why they may agree or disagree with my positions or suggestions. And during 10 years of writing "Speaking of Work" and "Ask Dr. Wally," the comments were the fuel to continue the task.
Thanks to you, for being readers and giving me your comments. I do encourage you to visit my Web site Askdrwally.com. |

Dr. Wallace Johnston has given us a lot of good business advice through the years. He taught in the classroom at VCU School of Business from September 1971 to May 1996, retiring as an associate professor emeritus. During that time he specialized in the areas of Administrative Theory, Organizational Behavior and Communications. His research was directed toward understanding cooperative relationships between individuals and their relationships within organizations. Along with consulting and training, he began writing and lecturing on these topics, and specializing in enhancing cooperative working relationships through development of teamwork, effective communication patterns and leadership skills.
For the past 10 years you could read his column twice weekly in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, which also was syndicated in 14 other national newspapers. Or, you could catch his commentary on National Public Radio. In recent years he continued training in leadership and effective communication skills through the School of Business’ Center for Corporate Education.
Dr. Wally is still giving us advice through his website www.askdrwally.com
Advice from Dr. Wally
‘What I do suggest is for all individuals to make a plan for their own growth and development. Success is individual and we all make choices as to what we want to accomplish. Individual failures are seldom the fault of others. Of course, it is easy to assign blame!
