QUICK TIME. The
School of Business’ Holiday Intersession, December
29 through January 10, has become a popular educational event.
This year is no exception, with all the classes filled. Five
management and one marketing class are being offered over
11 days. The Intersession has gained a reputation with students
from other universities such as Virginia State and University
of Richmond, as a place for earning 3 very intense credits
in a short time.
VP WEARS MANY HATS. Dr. Anson Seers, professor of management,
has been elected Vice President and Program Chair of the
Southern Management Association, a regional affiliate of
the Academy of Management. He also was inducted as a Fellow
of SMA at the November 2003 meeting, and served as an "Ask
the Experts" session panelist. His responsibilities
as Vice President at the 2003 meeting included conducting
the orientation of the incoming Track Chairs for the 2004
meeting, attending two Board of Governors meetings, and coordinating
food and beverage orders with the hotel.
ALUMN BOARD OFFERS JUMP START. On November 20 the Business
Alumni Board hosted “Jump Start Your Job Hunt!” for
business juniors, seniors and graduate students. Over 80
students attended the popular luncheon seminar where tips
on resume writing and interviewing are offered. Emily Saunders,
assistant vice president and employment operations administrator
for Land America talked about current practices in “Resume
Writing.” Kelly Sutter, I/T recruiter with Anthem gave
pointers on “Preparing for Interviewing.”
One of the high points of the seminar was hearing from Jeremy
Kain and Chuck Rohm of Markel Corp. Last year Jeremy was
an information systems intern who worked for Markel, reporting
to Chuck who is Chief of I/T Security there. Each discussed
the benefits of participating in an internship. Box lunchs
were sponsored by Glenn Davis, President of BranCore Technologies,
and a member of the Board.
CATCHING UP WITH RENNOVATION. It’s an ongoing activity
in the School of Business Building. In total, 39 classrooms
on the first, second, third and fifth floors will be renovated
which includes painting, new floor tiles and fixed seats
installed. On the lower floors classes meet from Mass Communications,
English, Social Studies, and numerous special language classes.
To date eight rooms have been completed as part of a $2,300,000
renovation that is scheduled to be completed by August 2004
