VCU CHAPTER OF GAMMA IOTA SIGMA RECEIVES FIVE AWARDS

VCU School of Business’ Alpha Mu Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma was honored to receive five national awards at the 36th Annual International Management Conference of the Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science Collegiate Fraternity. This is the most awards won in the chapter’s history.  The organization brought home the Chapter Management, Membership Development, Public Relations, and Alumni Relations awards; in addition, Alpha Mu was one of only two chapters to be named a Superior Chapter.

As one of the most coveted awards, the Superior Chapter designation recognizes those chapters demonstrating exceptional, well-rounded, and organized programs that exemplify the goals and objectives of Gamma Iota Sigma.  This newly-created award was given for the first time at the 2007 conference.  The Alpha Mu Chapter received the Alumni Relations and Chapter Management awards for the first time in its history.  Alpha Mu received the Public Relations and Membership Development awards for the second consecutive year.  The Management Conference was hosted by Howard University’s Tau Chapter in Washington, DC and all awards were presented at the Awards Dinner on October 13, 2007.

Gamma Iota Sigma is a professional collegiate fraternity that exists to promote, encourage, and sustain student interest in insurance, risk management, and actuarial science as careers.  The Grand Chapter is headquartered in Columbus, OH.  Each year, students from Gamma Iota Sigma's 49 chapters across the United States and Canada converge for the Management Conference to share ideas on chapter management, interact with the risk and insurance community, and recognize accomplishment within the membership.

The Alpha Mu Chapter looks forward to hosting the 37th Annual International Management Conference October 16-18, 2008 in the new VCU School of Business building.

STUDENT ECONOMISTS PREPARE
 FOR FED CHALLENGE NOVEMBER 13

Everyday the VCU Fed Challenge team monitors macroeconomic conditions in the U.S. and abroad.  As a team, they analyze the data, assess the trends and formulate an economic outlook for the U.S. economy.  On November 13th the team will present their findings to a panel of judges at the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank as they compete against other university teams in the Fed Challenge Competition.  Each team will propose and defend a monetary policy action to the judges who evaluate the teams’ research and presentation skills.

Last year VCU edged out Mount Saint Mary’s University by one point to win the District title and go on to the national competition.  During the national competition the team competed against teams from Boston College, Rutgers University, Newark and Northwestern University, last year’s winner.

“Competition has become tougher,” says Dr. Carol Lehr, associate professor of Economics who became the team’s coach last year, “but the students on this year’s team have worked very hard and have produced a thorough and well-researched analysis.  They are top-notch.” This year’s team members are business students Michael Matheson, Rohini Shantharam and Bruce Vann.

The Richmond Federal Reserve for the 5th District sponsors the College Fed Challenge, a regional academic competition, to encourage better understanding of the nation’s central bank, the forces influencing economic conditions in the United States and abroad, and the ways the economy affects people’s lives.

MORE THAN 11,000 CREDITS ACCRUED IN ONLINE COURSES

In the Fall 2002 Wilma Andrews began teaching the first online INFO16x courses. This fall, the INFO16X@VCU offerings transitioned to online accounts that train in Office 2007 and Vista for the five introductory level courses, INFO 160 (Vista, Internet, Computer Concepts), INFO 161 Word Processing (Word), INFO 162 Spreadsheets (Excel), INFO 166 Databases (Access), and INFO 168 Presentations (PowerPoint).

Mrs. Andrews has recorded over 11,000 credits registered in these online courses since 2002, when the School of Business changed the INFO16X courses from instructor-led, 5 week, graded, short courses to a model that offered online/self-paced/pass-fail/full semester courses.  Now, the program enables students to enhance their computer literacy and application software skills using online accounts with training and assessment while gaining academic credits and for some meeting computer literacy graduation requirements.  Two advanced courses in Word and Excel will be offered as online training and assessment using Office 2007 as it becomes available.
