VCU Campaign Raises Record $410 Million

Virginia Commonwealth University celebrated the conclusion of its largest capital campaign in history with the announcement that a record $410,341,216 was raised, exceeding the original $330.5 million goal by more than 24 percent, or nearly $80 million.

The ambitious, eight-year Campaign for VCU reflected eight major initiatives based on relating the university's needs to those of the community.

"This campaign was a huge success thanks to the teamwork of hundreds of volunteers and the generosity of thousands of people, including alumni and friends of VCU," said VCU President Eugene P. Trani.

The campaign was co-chaired by VCU School of Business alumni, Tom and Vickie Snead.

CHINESE SCHOLARS STUDY VCU PRESENTATION METHODS

CHINESE SCHOLARS

Dr. Weiyong Zhang, right, assistant professor of Management in the VCU School of Business, escorts two visiting professors from Beijing Foreign Studies University on a tour of the VCU campus.  Dr. Lianqian (Richard) Cai, left, and Dr. Huayong (Hardy) Niu, center, are here to learn the western way of giving presentations and conducting research.

This semester two professor-scholars from the Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) are studying the “how-to skills” of giving presentations at the VCU School of Business. They are Dr. Lianqian (Richard) Cai, an Associate Professor and Dean’s Assistant, and Dr. Huayong (Hardy) Niu, a lecturer and Deputy Dean of the School of International Business. They will be watching and learning various presentation techniques and research methods.

Both professors were awarded scholarships from the State Scholarship Fund of P.R. China to pursue research work in the U.S. “Awardees are selected through a rigid academia evaluation process organized by China Scholar Council(CSC). This program's main objective is to help the faculty members do better in their research fields,” said Hardy. “Both of us have a mentor here, and we talk about our research plan with them. We also attend many seminars here to learn the way presentations are given, and we join some graduate level classes. Having a large number of journals and references available as does the VCU libraries, are very helpful for us. We only have a smaller part of them in China.”

Drs. Cai and Niu will be staying in the U.S. a year. They were given the opportunity to come to VCU because of the good relationship between the University and BFSU.

FINANCIAL REPORTING ISSUES DISCUSSED
BY DR. GARY PREVITS, THALHIMER SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE

“What is the role of accounting? If you don’t do financial
communications, no one knows what is happening.

Previts Seminar

Dr. Gary Previts. the Charles G. Thalhimer Family Scholar-in-Residence, spoke to several classes and delivered a public presentation to a crowd of 200 students, faculty and community members during his two-day residency at VCU in September.

His public presentation focused on "Financial Reporting Models: From Our First Big Businesses to Today.” Dr. Previts briefly reviewed a 30-year history of U.S. business practices and issues from the earliest corporate reporting to public investors to 21st century digital reports filed with the SEC on EDGAR. This technical transformation of information to investors both individual and institutional, he called remarkable.

Later in the morning he made a Faculty Research presentation. He credited two 20th century episodes in American accounting history, the establishment of the Return on Investment metric by Donaldson Brown of DuPont, and the collapse of the investments of Ivar Kreuger—two seemingly unrelated episodes—as intersecting parts in the telling of two important chapters in the formation and regulation of today’s accounting environment.

“Soon a new Blue Ribbon Committee will begin looking into all of these business reporting issues, “ he said. Perhaps they will answer a question. that Dr. Previts asked a lot: How much reporting is enough?

Dr. Previts is the President of the American Accounting Association and a professor of Accountancy, Case Western Reserve University, Weatherhead School of Management.
