DR. EPPS RECEIVES FUNDING
TO STUDY EFFECTIVENESS OF SOX 404
PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has awarded $24,500 to Ruth W. Epps, Ph.D., CPA, professor of Accounting in the VCU School of Business, and second year doctoral student, Cynthia Guthrie to investigate “Internal Control Deficiencies and Discretionary Accruals: Do Material Weaknesses in Internal Control Impact Discretionary Accruals?” The proposed study explores whether Sarbanes-Oxley Act Section 404 internal control requirements have resulted in better quality earnings as measured by discretionary accruals.
The project research completion date is August 15, 2007. A written summary of the research will be submitted to PwC by October 1, 2007. Also at that time, a research manuscript will be submitted to an academic journal for consideration for publication. |

FIRST COLLABORATION PRODUCES
SNAPPY, CLEVER BUSINESS BOOK
No one strategy fits all companies agree the four authors of “How to Plan and Execute Strategy” (McGraw-Hill $12.95). They all teach graduate business classes and have diversified management experience: Mr.
Wallace Stettinius, retired president and CEO of Cadmus and a Fellow at
the VCU School of Business; Dr. D. Robley Wood, Jr., professor of Management at
the VCU School of
Business; Dr. Jacqueline L. Doyle, a post doctoral Fellow at the Darden School
of Business; and John L. Colley, Jr., the Coleman Professor of Business Administration at the Darden School.
They each have authored or co-authored other business books,
and this book of 129 pages demonstrates
that it must have been fun writing these parables for success. In fact, the
authors divided the book into “24 Steps to
Implement any Corporate Strategy Successfully” and started writing their assigned steps. They then exchanged copy and edited it.
Each step or chapter is only two pages long, and is accompanied by a cartoon.
Each moves you closer to your goal with headlines such as “Define your Businesses”, “Know Your Market” or “Follow Your Mission.”
These steps are helping businesspeople around the world – with translations in Indonesian, Chinese, Japanese, and reprints in English in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand and Sri Lanka. |

AMBROSE JONES MAKES HIS DREAM COME TRUE
Ambrose Jones III crowned a business career of
more than 35 years by receiving
a Ph.D. in
Business at VCU’s May 19 graduation. His first career as a CPA and partner in a national accounting firm lasted 23 years.
“It was great,” says Jones, but his real dream was to teach, and so he began to take prerequisites at VCU School of Business where his son Michael was studying to be an accountant. Dr. Jones’ next stop is Greensboro, NC. He will be moving there soon, where he will begin teaching at the University of North Carolina. Read Dr. Jones’ story at

BUSINESS AND BASEBALL: A GOOD MIX
The RAMS baseball team wrapped up a good season, putting up the most wins since 2003, and finishing the season with an impressive 37-23 overall record. Seven business students were on the team, including seniors Trai Harris, who is majoring in
economics, and Barrett Ripley, a business major.
The remaining business students are freshmen who will move up to support the RAMS program next year.
“Baseball players are always popular with their fellow students,” observed Kim Gower, instructor for MGT 325 Organizational Communications.
Trai Harris and Kwan Evans (a junior sports management major) are good examples of baseball players taking business subjects.
“I think it is because of their outgoing personalities. They are always courteous and participate well in class.” |
