News Briefs - July 8, 2004

STARS RESPONDING. During the past three weeks over 250 freshmen and transfer students have responded to the School of Business' invitation to participate in our summer orientation program STAR (Students Testing, Advising and Registration). A large number of STAR students are accompanied by their parents, many of whom also are visiting VCU for the first time. Students also are able to complete some testing which allows them to move smoothly into their classes in the fall. Four more STAR dates will be held during July.

ANALYSTS COMPLETE PROGRAM. The Center for Corporate Education presented certificates of completion in its Financial Analyst Program to 11 financial planners and VCU students. Each has successfully completed 40 hours of classroom instruction taught by Dr. David Upton and Dr. David Dubofsky. The program is designed to prepare students for the Chartered Financial Analyst Examination leading to the CFA ® designation. Those receiving certificates were: Thomas E. Phillips, Jr., UBS; Jason Seiden, Flemming Financial Services; Larry S. Golub, Raymond James; David Barrett-Johnson, Barrett-Johnson; John Tyler Nichols, American Express Financial Advisors. In addition, six VCU students: Talgat Irisbekov, Ken Liu, Anthony M. Diesen, David M. Bunger, An Jun Li, Joseph T. Loza received certificates. All VCU students were 2004 graduates.

Dr. Anson SeersRESEARCHING BEHAVIOR. Dr. Anson Seers, professor of management, received a Best Paper Award from the Administrative Sciences of Canada (ASAC) in June at its annual meeting in Quebec. Dr. Seers co-authored the paper on "Organizational Behaviour" with Dr. Linda Kemp, Concordia College and Dr. Nellie Sue Bruning, University of Manitoba. Congratulations.

Dr. Bensen WierDR. BENSEN WIER PROFILED. Dr. Bensen Wier has completed over 600 study lessons for The Wall Street Journal. He is profiled on the School of Business Home Page for his work. The objective of the Journal's special program is to help teachers and students integrate the paper's content into their curriculum. Wier, who recently was promoted to the rank of full professor, came to VCU's accounting department in 1992. Read more at http://www.bus.vcu.edu/news/wier.html

CATCH A MOOSE ON AMAZON. Before the ink is even dry, "The Moose Encyclopedia" by Dr. Walter Griggs Jr. and the late Bill Silliker, Jr. are being featured in a prebuy on Amazon.com for $15.95. The official release date has not been finalized. One of the Encyclopedia's photographs was published in the October 26 Richmond Times- Dispatch. Dr. Griggs has been collecting moose memorabilia for many years as had Mr. Silliker, who was known as "Maine's Mooseman."

CLOSING THOUGHT - A quick glance at the 2004-2005 Board of Directors for the VCU Alumni Association shows that 15 of the 25 Board members are School of Business graduates and one of ours, Bill Ginther, is the President.
