PRESIDENT OF FEDERAL
RESERVE SETS CHALLENGE, GIVES ASSIGNMENTS TO NEW GENERATION
OF GRADUATES
Dr. Alfred Broaddus, president of The Federal Reserve Bank
of Richmond delivered challenging remarks to graduates at
the May 22 School of Business commencement at the Siegel
Center. After pointing out that the past year produced the
most widely publicized corporate governance scandals in recent
memory, he challenged the graduates "to hold yourselves
to the highest standards in your careers and in your lives,
and to demand the same of your associates." He also
presented the graduates with two assignments. "Confront
the major economic and social policy issues our nation faces
and deal with them more effectively than my generation has," he
said. He urged graduates to become involved in their communities
by helping build financial literacy among the disadvantaged
members of society. One issue, he described, as the "growing
disparity of income and wealth across American households
that is already straining our social fabric, and which will
strain it further if this trend continues,"
He spoke of his long association with the School's faculty,
and of the many alumni now employed and playing key roles
at all levels of the Bank's diverse operation, saying that
without any exaggeration those employees shine.
The complete text of Dr. Broaddus' remarks are available
on the School of Business website www.bus.vcu.edu.
