VISITING SPEAKERS Throughout the month several guest speakers have made presentations to various classes. On March 12 economist Dr. Leonard Lapidus of the U.S. Treasury spoke to the Fast Track Executive MBA class and later to faculty and guests. His topic was a review of his responsibilities as a Senior Advisor to the Central Bank of Iraq. While there, his team worked with local bankers to reform and rebuild Iraq's banking and financial system and to make it privately owned, safe and competitive.

On March 11, Dr. Neal M. Ashkanasy , professor of management, The University of Queensland, and visiting professor, Fuqua School of Business, Duke University spoke to students and faculty on "A Multi-Level Model of Emotions in Organizations". In recent years we have seen an upsurge of interest in the study of emotions in organizations. Research has been hampered by the ephemeral nature of emotions, and a lack of an integrated multi-level model. In this presentation Dr. Ashkanasy presented a five-level model of emotions in organizations and discussed them.

STUDENTS NEED BETTER INSIGHT OF FED Recently at the Virginia Association of Economists conference Dr. Dennis O'Toole discussed a paper written by Dr. Margaret Ray of the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank and Dr. Andrew Hill of the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank, titled "The Fed: Fact or Fiction? The Treatment of the Fed in Principles of Economic Texts." Their argument is that most "principles of economics textbooks" frequently convey incorrect or outdated information about the Federal Reserve System. Publishers and writers appear to assume that the Fed has not changed from years past, and so they are not keeping up with the changes that the Fed has made. (A textbook requires about two years to be revised, so if corrections are not made in a timely manner, some information may become obsolete.) The Federal Reserve argues that at present there are a number of items that they (the Federal Reserve System) thought were important that have been omitted.

The purpose of the papers is to get economic principles text writers to update and improve their treatment of the Fed. Dr. O'Toole made eight suggestions to the authors of this paper to improve the chances that textbook writers will make the needed changes. .
