GRADUATION APPROACHING
FOR INAUGURAL FTEMS CLASS
The Fast Track Executive MS
in Information Systems inaugural class began
its final module of coursework on February 16 with George Foresman,
Under Secretary for Preparedness, U.S. Department of Homeland
Security, discussing cyber terrorism, and the role of
preparedness and merging risk in the 21st Century environment.
The Information Systems Department has invited a series of
well-recognized Virginia government speakers to bring their first
year to a close. Nineteen students will be graduating. Included in upcoming sessions are the Honorable Aneesh Chopra, Secretary of Technology for the Commonwealth; Les Lauziere Criminal Investigator, Office of the Attorney General, Virginia Cyber Crime Strike Force for the Commonwealth and Karen Jackson, Director of the Office of Telework Promotion and Broadband Assistance for the Commonwealth.
Courses for the Class of 2008 begin this month.

“State vs. Federal Insurance Licensing & Regulation” is the topic for the VCU Second Annual RISC Conference to be held March 14 from 7:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the VCU Student Commons, 907 Floyd Ave., Richmond. Discussing the
"In’s, the Out’s and all the slippery stuff in between" will be a panel moderated by Virginia Insurance Commissioner Al Gross. Panelists will be Birny Birnbaum with the Center of Economic Justice, Maurice Perkins, Vice President of Federal Relations, Ben McKay, Sr. Vice President, Property Casualty Insurers (PCI) and Tom Koonce, AVP of Federal Affairs.
Dr. Eugene Trani, VCU President, will open the conference at a
7:30 a.m. breakfast, followed by key note speaker The Honorable Congressman Eric Cantor (D). Luncheon will take the form of a Town Hall Meeting with panelists from the Virginia State Corporation Commission, Office of the Insurance Commission. Robert Bradshaw will moderate. Included are Al Gross, Commissioner, Brian Gaudiose, Department Commissioner; Mary Bannister, P&C; Jackie Cunningham, L&H and Doug Stolte, Financial Services.
Afternoon speakers for CE Credits will be Rich Sobata, FEMA, discussing “Flood—Beyond Flood” and Barton Pasco, President, Pasco Financial Group.

INSURANCE CAREER FAIR HONES JOB HUNTING SKILLS
This year the Risk & Insurance and Finance Career Fair was held in the School of Business building, increasing its visibility among business students. On January 30 over 200 students visited with insurance and finance related vendors. The career fair was sponsored by the School of Business, Risk & Insurance Studies Center and Gamma Iota Sigma, the insurance fraternity
“We had 22 companies representing the insurance and financial services industry. Both the students and company representatives had great comments about the event,” reported Debbie Little, Director of the Risk & Insurance Studies Center.

CAREER FAIR CONNECTS STUDENT AND
COMPANIES
Business students, particularly seniors and grad students were among the several hundred job seekers attending the VCU Career Center’s annual Career Fair which drew about 70 employers ranging from Fortune 500 corporations to local businesses and government agencies. “They were looking for prospects from the class of 2007, which will enter the hottest job market for new graduates in several years,” according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Employers expect to hire 17.4 percent, more recent college graduates in this year’s class than in 2006.
The fair was reviewed by staff reporter John Reid Blackwell in the Richmond Times-Dispatch which featured quotes by business majors Priyanka Patel, Terecia Dixon and Thao Tran. Read the story

FOCUS ON RESEARCH
Abstracts from the various research presentations in the School of Business will be collected and posted on the website under the “Research” Tab. This includes research supported by the Dean’s Summer Research grants, and departmental presentations. Each abstract will be accompanied by a photo of the professor and a link to his/her website where additional information is available about the professor’s research interests and journal entries.

ROBERT W. TAYLOR APPOINTED AIET TRUSTEE
Robert W. Taylor (BS'84, MBA'04), MAI, SRA has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Appraisal Institute Education Trust (AIET) for a two-year term. Taylor is the Director of the Virginia Real Estate Center, a part of the Real Estate and Urban Land Development
program in the VCU School of Business.
AIET is a national trust that was founded for charitable, literary, educational and scientific purposes. Specifically, the Education Trust receives, administers, and disburses funds to improve, advance, research, and teach the techniques of real estate appraisal. It promotes and conducts research to study all aspects of real estate appraisal; encourages and subsidizes the writing and publication of treatises, books, and pamphlets relating to real estate appraisal; and awards scholarships and internships to qualified individuals for education or work in the field of real estate appraisal.

HOLLY CLARY NAMED ENROLLMENT & RECRUITMENT COORDINATOR
Ms. Holly Clary (BS'03, MBA'05) has recently joined
the VCU School of Business faculty as Enrollment and Recruitment Management Coordinator. She will be responsible for planning events and activities designed for the recruitment of both undergraduate and graduate business students.
Ms. Clary is a two time alumnus of the VCU School of Business. She received her Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations and her Master of Business Administration. She comes to VCU from the Science Museum of Virginia where she was a human resource analyst. Her duties included recruiting, training, and developing special programs.
Holly is also an adjunct professor for the Department of Management and is teaching MGMT 331--Human Resource Management.
Holly's office is located in the GSIB corridor, room 4142. We are pleased to have Holly as part of our team! |

VCEE, contributed to that figure by recruiting and teaching several hundred teachers in the Chesterfield, Henrico and surrounding counties region. |
