NEWS BRIEFS – February 2007

Benson Wier

Last year Dr Eugene P. Trani, VCU President, presented  the 2005 Alumni Award Star to Nancy Everett for her many personal public service contributions. She also sits on the School of Business Foundation Board.

EVERETT COUNSELS GRADUATES "BE TRUE TO YOURSELVES"

“As future leaders you have the
 opportunity and indeed, the
Responsibility, to engage in the world.”

Nancy C. Everett, chairman and CEO of General Motors Asset Management Corp. and its U.S. Subsidiaries, and a School of Business graduate, was the winter graduation speaker in the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.  She urged the Class of 2006 to be true to themselves, to give a little back and to be sure to enjoy the ride to success.

"It's not about making a lot of money, and not about getting a lot of recognition, it's about the challenge," she said. "It's looking in the mirror and feeling good about the day."  Everett, who earned a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1978 at VCU, received an honorary doctor of humane letters during the ceremony.

ADDRESSING STUDENTS' PERSONAL FINANCE CONCERNS

Youth spending and the personal finances of college students have become of national concern, according to a report by the Federal Reserve Bank.  The VCU School of Business Department of Finance, Insurance & Real Estate (FIRE) is taking steps to address the problem.

“Dollars and Sense” is a financial literacy program co-sponsored by the FIRE department and the VCU Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, is offered free of charge to students from across campus.  “We have had a reasonable turnout,” said Dr. David Upton, Finance Department Chair. “It shows that students are interested, and are making conscientious efforts to manage their money."

In addition, this semester the FIRE department has added a second 3-credit course in Personal Financial Planning (FIRE 315), which also attracts students from many academic programs. The classes are being taught by Lisa Byles, a graduate of the Certified Financial Planners program supervised by Dr. Upton through the Center for Corporate Education, and John McFarland, an instructor in the CFP© program.

"Dollars and Sense" has three more classes planned this semester. The classes will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on February 21 in the Richmond Salon II; March 21 in Richmond Salon I and on April 18 in the Forum Room, all in the Student Commons. No fee.  For further information, contact Beverly A. Walker, M.Ed., assistant director, Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (804) 828-6672.

STUDENT AMBASSADORS SOUGHT

The School of Business is seeking “Student Ambassadors” to assist with the recruitment of prospective students, announces Holly M. Clary, Recruitment & Enrollment Manager. “This is a great opportunity for our current students to have a hand in shaping the future of VCU.  In addition, they will acquire a valuable service opportunity to include on their resume,” said Clary.

Application to the Student Ambassador Program is open to all students, and once selected, they can continue to serve in the role of Ambassador as long as they wish.  A Student Ambassador is responsible for assisting with Open Houses, Information Sessions, and other special events.  They will also play a key role in making phone contact with any accepted students who have not yet finalized their enrollment at VCU for the purpose of answering any further questions that they may have and also to let them know how excited we are about their acceptance. For application go to:

To learn more about this program, contact Mrs. Clary at (804) 828-1742 or hmclary@vcu.eduThe application deadline is February 15.
