Dr. Mike
Little |
Dr. Michael Little, Interim
Chair and Associate
Professor
Profile:
Michael W. Little Ph.D. is an
associate professor of marketing
in the MKTG department in the
VCU School of Business and
joined the university in 1983.
He is also the faculty advisor
for the Executive MBA and
'traditional' MBA programs in
the School of Business. He is a
member of the American Marketing
Association, the American
Collegiate Retailing
Association, and the Downtown
Chapter of the Richmond Rotary
Club. Dr. Little has previously
served at Associate Dean of
Graduate Studies in the VCU
School of Business.
Education: Dr. Little
received his Bachelor of Science
from Western Michigan University
and his Master's of Science as
well as his Ph.D. from Michigan
State University.
Teaching interests: Dr.
Little's teaching interests
include retailing and marketing
strategy. He currently teaches
Retail Management
(MKTG 340), Marketing Management
(MKTG 671), and Field Project in
Marketing (MKTG 693). In the
Field Project in Marketing (MKTG
693), Dr. Little supervises MBA
student teams on marketing plan
and product development projects
for the Virginia Biosciences
Commercialization Center and
other Richmond area
corporations.
Research interests:
Dr. Little's
research interests are focused
on Internet marketing,
specifically related to internet
gambling by college youth and
how that population uses
networks. Drs. Little and
Wijnholds have collaborated on
projects related to marketing
and legal implications regarding
harmful products sold over the
Internet including cigarettes
and gambling.

Dr. Deborah
L. Cowles |
Dr. Deborah L. Cowles, Associate
Professor
Profile:
Deborah L. Cowles Ph.D. is
an associate professor of
marketing in the MKTG department
in the VCU School of Business.
She also teaches advertising
research at VCU's nationally
recognized Ad Center and serves
as a core faculty member for the
Executive MBA program in the VCU
School of Business. Dr. Cowles'
research, teaching, and service
efforts encompass the private,
public, and non-profit sectors.
Her research has appeared in
national and international
academic publications including
The Journal of Marketing.
Dr. Cowles' consulting
experience in the private sector
includes work with small
businesses and large
corporations as well as pro bono
service to numerous non-profit
organizations. Dr. Cowles was
appointed in 1986 and has been
with VCU for twenty-one years.
Education: Dr. Cowles
received a Bachelor of Arts from
Ohio Wesleyan University. She
also holds both a Master of Arts
from the University of Texas and
a Ph.D. from Arizona State
University.
Teaching interests: Dr.
Cowles has teaching experience
in relationship marketing,
e-commerce, and services
marketing. She currently teaches
Buyer Behavior (MKTG 315),
Services Marketing (MKTG 442),
and Internet Marketing
(MKTG 448).
Research interests:
Her research
interests include marketing
communication with low literacy
consumers and how marketing
through technology impacts
individuals.

Dr. Jodie L.
Ferguson |
Dr. Jodie
L. Ferguson, Assistant Professor
Profile: Jodie L.
Ferguson Ph.D. is an assistant
of marketing in the MKTG
department in the VCU School of
Business. Dr. Ferguson recently
joined the MKTG department after
completing her Ph.D. in
marketing at Georgia State
University. She is the faculty
advisor for the VCU Chapter of
the American Marketing
Association, a student
organization focused on engaging
students who are interested in
understanding the facets and
principles of marketing. Dr.
Ferguson was appointed in the
fall of 2008.
Education: Dr.
Ferguson received a Bachelor of
Arts in marketing from the Ohio
State University. She also holds
an MBA in marketing and a Ph.D.
from Georgia State University.
Teaching interests: Her teaching
interests include marketing
research and consumer behavior.
She currently teaches
Marketing
Principles (MKTG
301) and Information for
Marketing Decisions (MKTG 310).
Research interests:
Dr. Ferguson's research
interests include consumer
behavior and public policy
issues. Specifically, she is
actively doing research on
consumer perceptions of price
fairness, dissatisfaction
response behaviors, and consumer
privacy.

Dr. Frank
Franzak |
Dr. Frank Franzak, Associate
Professor
Profile:
Frank Franzak Ph.D. is an
associate professor of marketing
in the MTKG department in the
VCU School of Business. Dr.
Franzak has been a part of the
department since 1986 and was
chair from July of 2002 to July
of 2008. Previous to his
appointment at VCU, he was on
the faculty of Boston College
School of Management. He is
currently a board member with
the American Marketing
Association Global Marketing
Special Interest Group. He is
also the faculty mentor and is
in charge of recruiting students
to the
da Vinci Center sponsored by
the Schools of Arts,
Engineering, and Business.
Education:
Dr. Franzak received a Bachelor
of Science from Virginia
Polytechnic Institute in 1973
and an MBA and PhD from the
University of Maryland.
Teaching
interests: Dr. Franzak's
teaching interests currently
include product development,
international marketing,
marketing management, and
marketing research. He currently
teaches Product Development and
Management (MKTG 450), Marketing
Management (MKTG 671), Concepts
and Issues in Marketing (MKTG
570), and Independent Study:
Product Development Project
(MKTG 455) as part of the da
Vinci Center.
Research interests: Dr.
Franzak's primary research
interests include new product
development [NPD] and global
marketing. To connect to the
MKTG
department's
focus on responsible marketing,
he is currently exploring NPD
within the contextual areas of
emerging
technologies,
particularly medical, and
globalization
by small-to-medium enterprises.

Dr. Haeran
Jae
|
Dr. Haeran Jae, Assistant
Professor
Profile:
Haeran Jae Ph.D. is an assistant
professor of marketing in the
MKTG department in the VCU
School of Business. Dr. Jae has
been an assistant professor with
the MKTG department since 2006.
She is a native of South Korea
and an alumnus of the University
of Kentucky and Florida Gulf
Coast University.
Education: Dr. Jae received
her Bachelor of Arts from Pusan
National University, her MBA
from Florida Gulf Coast
University, and her Ph.D. from
the University of Kentucky.
Teaching interests: Dr.
Jae's teaching interests include
promotion management, marketing
research, and services
marketing. She currently teaches
Information for Marketing
Decisions (MKTG 310), Services
Marketing (MKTG 442), and
Service Quality Management (MKTG
674).
Research interests:
Dr. Jae's research centers on
marketing communication with
low-literacy consumers.
Marketing efforts toward this or
any disadvantaged segment
presents considerable
challenges, and there is much to
be learned that can apply to
numerous aspects of responsible
marketing. Dr. Jae's current
projects are looking at (1)
comparisons of reading processes
and working memory between high
and low-literacy consumers, (2)
low-literacy consumers reliance
on peripheral cues such as
pictures when making decisions,
and (3) the extension of
findings in the low-literacy
area to consumers in the United
States who are linguistically
isolated, examining the impact
of this situation on marketplace
participation.

Dr. Dennis
McDermott |
Dr. Dennis McDermott, Emeritus
Profile:
Dennis McDermott Ph.D. is an
emeritus associate professor of marketing
in the MKTG department in the
VCU School of Business. He
retired at the end of the
2008-2009 academic year after
thirty years of service. He has authored over 50 articles
and has been consulted by
numerous business and
governmental organizations
particularly in the health care
field. He is a member of the
American Marketing Association,
the Academy of Marketing
Science, and the Sales and
Marketing Executives.
Education: Dr. McDermott
received his Bachelor of Science
degree from University of Toledo
and his MBA and Ph.D. from Ohio
State University.

Dr. Tom Myers
|
Dr. Thomas Myers, Assistant
Professor (Collateral)
Profile:
Tom Myers, Ph.D. has 33 years of
teaching experience at the
graduate and undergraduate
level. He has held faculty
positions at VCU, University of
Richmond, Randolph Macon
College, and Mary Baldwin
College. Throughout the years,
he has also been a consultant to
a wide variety of private and
public sector organizations
including Comdial, Centel, the
U.S. Department of Defense, and
the Supreme Court of Virginia.
He also served as President of
Urbanna Bridge Marina, Inc.,
where he acted as owner-operator
of that resort property.
Education: Dr.
Myers earned his Bachelor of
Arts in History in 1973, his
Master's of Science in Marketing
in 1977, and his Ph.D. with a
concentration in Marketing and
Public Administration in 1990,
all from VCU.
Teaching interests:
Dr.
Myers has teaching interests in
services/relationship marketing,
entrepreneurship, and consumer
behavior. He currently teaches Marketing
Principles (MKTG
301), Marketing Problems (MKTG
302), Information for Marketing
Decisions (MKTG 310), and Buyer
Behavior (MKTG 315).

Dr. David J. Urban,
Interim Dean of the
School of Business
and Professor
Profile:
David J. Urban
Ph.D., P.C.M. is
Professor of
Marketing and
the Interim Dean of the VCU School of
Business. He
formerly held a
joint appointment as
Director of the
Survey and
Evaluation Research
Laboratory (SERL) in
the L. Douglas
Wilder School of
Government and
Public Affairs. He
has received eight
peer-reviewed
national/international
awards for teaching
excellence. He has
also been honored by
his School of
Business peers with
the Distinguished
Teaching Award,
Distinguished
Service Award, and
Award of Excellence.
He is the only
professor from the
VCU School of
Business to have
ever received an
Outstanding Faculty
Award from the State
Council of Higher
Education for
Virginia (SCHEV).
This award is the
Commonwealth of
Virginia's highest
honor for the
faculty at
Virginia's public
and private colleges
and universities.
Dr. Urban came to
VCU in 1989, having
previously been a
faculty member in
the Robinson College
of Business
Administration at
Georgia State
University.
Education:
Dr. Urban received a
Bachelor of Science
in Commerce from the
University of
Virginia. He also
holds both a Master
of Arts in
Psychology and a
Ph.D. in Business
Administration from
the University of
Michigan.
Teaching
interests: Dr.
Urban has taught in
almost every area of
marketing at the
graduate and
undergraduate
levels. He currently
teaches Marketing
Principles (MKTG
301) and Marketing
Analytics (MKTG
691). He also
teaches most of the
MKTG sessions in the
Executive MBA
Program.
Research
interests: Dr.
Urban's main
research interests
are in customer
satisfaction
measurement,
retailing, and
public policy
issues. His previous
joint appointment
with in the Wilder
School provided him
the opportunity to
be involved in
numerous research
projects across the
University. Examples
include: political
polling; developing
measures of business
climate for state
government;
assessing service
quality among
telephone service
subscribers in
Virginia; and
measuring service
quality in
low-income mortgage
lending. Each of
these studies
involved application
of qualitative and
quantitative methods
to measure, and
eventually to
improve, public
sector performance.

Dr. Heiko
Wijnholds |
Dr. Heiko Wijnholds, Associate
Professor
Profile:
Heiko Wijnholds Ph.D. is an
associate professor of marketing
in the MKTG department in the
VCU School of Business and has
been part of VCU since 1979. He
is formerly the chair of the
Finance and Marketing
department. Dr. Wijnholds has
presented numerous refereed
papers at international and
regional conferences in North
America, Western Europe, and
South Africa. He has authored
several major research reports,
co-authored a textbook published
by McGraw-Hill, and has
published a number of articles
in leading publications. His
major activities include
business journalism, conducting
small business marketing
research studies, providing
housing forecasts, and serving
as a reviewer for academic
journals and conferences.
Education: Dr. Wijnholds
received his Bachelor of
Commerce in Business
Administration and Economics
from the University of Pretoria
in 1964. He then received a
Master's of Commerce in
Marketing and a Doctorate of
Commerce in Marketing from the
University of South Africa in
1967 and 1970 respectively.
Teaching interests: Dr.
Wijnholds teaching interests
include international marketing
and marketing research. He
currently teaches International
Marketing (MKTG 320), Concepts
and Issues in Marketing (MKTG
570), International Marketing
(MKTG 656), and Marketing
Research (MKTG 673).
Research interests:
The primary research focus of
his research entails a continuing
investigation into on-line
marketing, particularly of
markets involving harmful
products, such as gambling and
cigarettes. Most of this work is
being done in conjunction with
Dr. Michael Little. Viewed in a
broad context, this research
considers the impact of these
growing markets on web
operators, consumers, financial
institutions, technology
providers, legislators, and law
enforcement agencies. This
research encompasses not only
the domestic environment but
also the role of global forces,
such as foreign operators,
relevant foreign laws and
international treaties.

Dr. Van Wood
|
Dr. Van Wood, Professor and
Phillip Morris Chair of
International Business
Profile:
Van Wood Ph.D. is a professor of
marketing and the Phillip Chair
of International Business in the
VCU School of Business. He has
been with VCU since 1994 and is
the lead faculty member for the
International Business
Certificate program. He is a
specialist in international
business with over 30 years of
experience in global marketing
and trade. He has produced and
moderated 14 International
Forums each with a unique
international business focus.
Dr. Wood has been awarded grants
to develop international
programs from the Fulbright
Commission, the World Bank, the
U.S. Department of Education,
the U.S. Department of Commerce,
VCU, Texas Tech University, and
other institutions.
Education: Dr. Wood was
educated at the United States
Merchant Marine Academy. He
received his Bachelor of Arts in
Marketing in 1973 and his MBA in
International Business in 1975
from the University of
Washington. He later earned a
Ph.D. in International Marketing
in 1982 from the University of
Oregon.
Teaching interests: His
teaching interests focus on
globalization, the selection and
development of international
markets, international marketing
opportunities, and competition
and profitability in
international markets. He
presently teaches Marketing
Principles (MKTG 301),
International Marketing (MKTG
320), and Guided Study in
Marketing (MKTG 697).
Research interests:
Dr. Wood has as his primary
research focus the correlates of
international business success.
His current research project
deals with the area of
"cognitive structures" of
experienced exporters. This work
demonstrates that experienced
international business managers
show evidence of a distinct
cognitive structure that is both
logical and hierarchical. This
work in not only relevant to our
understanding how mental
frameworks are formed and used
when evaluating international
market opportunities, but it
lends insights into the critical
elements of global business
success and thus economic and
social development. It is
directly tied to the notion of
responsible marketing and the
positive advancement of human
endeavors in the international
arena of commerce and trade.
