Description
Many marketing
students become intrigued with the mystique and adventure promised
by a career in international marketing. Opportunities in
international marketing are growing as technology removes physical
and communication barriers that have traditionally separated
cultures. Planning and managerial positions abroad usually go to
people who have had some international marketing experience at
headquarters. Starting jobs in international marketing at
headquarters vary widely, but for a person with a master's degree,
it usually involves research, strategy planning, or coordinating
activities.
Career Opportunities
Some organizations
hire recent college graduates for international marketing, but most
select MBAs and/or experienced personnel who have proven themselves
in domestic operations. This situation is changing as more and more
companies recognize the pervasiveness of global business. Because
competitors from foreign countries are entering overseas markets,
they are involved in global marketing whether they consider
themselves international or not.
Entry Level Positions
Because much
international placement is conducted within the firm, a domestic
sales position with a global company may be the best first step
toward international opportunities.
Requisite Personal Qualities
Fluency in
appropriate foreign languages and understanding foreign cultures are
useful.
Academic Preparation
A broadly based
background in marketing is recommended, with emphasis on sales
management, market research, and marketing strategy.
