Virginia International Business Council Scholarship 2009

The Virginia International Business Council (VAIBC), adhering to the mission of supporting international business in its community, has established a Scholarship Program that awards scholarships to students attending the following Central Virginia institutions - Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Virginia State University (VSU), Virginia Union University (VUU), Randolph Macon College (RMC), and the University of Richmond (U of R). Scholarship awards will be paid directly to the recipients. The Virginia International Business Council is dedicated to educating its members, the members of the international business community and the community at large with respect to global business opportunities and challenges. It supports both secondary and higher education and encourages students at all levels to consider the field of international business as a career. Scholarship funds awarded to students are granted to support their international study activities. To be eligible, students must be a rising undergraduate junior or senior, or a graduate student, having a GPA of 3.0 or higher. They must submit a written statement of their interest in international business; include a faculty letter of recommendation and a copy of a current unofficial transcript. Four awards will be given this year - one at $1000, two at $750 and one at $500.

Virginia International Business Council Scholarships will be granted each academic year. The VAIBC-Education Committee this year (2009) will include Van R. Wood, My Lan Tran and George Hiller. All applications must be received no later than Friday, March 27, 2009 by noon. The screening committee will announce its selection(s) no later than April 10, 2009. All scholarship recipients will be notified by mail and recognized at the club's April 22, 2008 luncheon. Scholarship recipients will also receive a one-year Virginia International Business Council membership. Recipients will be allowed to receive the Virginia International Business Council only one time. Minority and international students are strongly encouraged to apply for this scholarship. The 2010 BIE Grant Student Study in Cairo, Egypt

Opportunity: Funding is available to support 5 VCU students for a period of 3 weeks (May 15th - June 5th, 2010 - see attached sample schedule) in Cairo, Egypt. Only U.S. citizens who are currently students at VCU may apply. Selected students will be funded for related travel, housing, food and incidental expenses and will be supervised by VCU partners at Helwan University in Cairo, Egypt. During the three week program selected students will also receive instruction in Middle-East History and Arabic; will visit business, cultural and other organizations and will travel to selected sites within Egypt. Participants can earn up to 3 VCU elective credits for this undertaking. For more information, interested students can contact Dr. Van R. Criteria for selection: Sophomore status or higher (undergraduate or graduate student), GPA of 3.0 or higher, evidence of the maturity necessary to succeed in an international setting, importance of this experience for a student's major, minor, and / or future career plans. Preference will be given to those who have never had a long-term experience in an Arabic-speaking country. Selected students must be willing to share, as appropriate, their experience with students and faculty at VCU as well as the Richmond community upon their return from the program.
