Admission Criteria

Acceptance to the Global Scholar program is a separate decision from admission to VCU. Applicants must apply to VCU and to the Global Scholar program. Prospective Global Scholar students are generally but not solely evaluated on the criteria listed below which is consistent with the policies for admission to VCU immediately after high school graduation. The target is to accept approximately 30 students each to constitute the cohort for the year.

  • High School Grade Point Average and Rank in Class or other measure of the student's performance in high school or equivalent preparation. (Students that do not have a class ranking will not be penalized in the admission process.)
  • Test Scores from the SAT I or ACT.
  • Course of study pursued during high school or equivalent preparation. This should have included 4 units of English, a minimum of 3 units of history, social studies or government, a minimum of 4 units in mathematics including algebra II and preferably applied calculus, 2 or more units in science with at least one laboratory, and 2 or more units of at least one foreign language are very strongly recommended.
  • Written statement to support your admission to the VCU Global Scholars Program.

The VCU deadline for students to apply for a university scholarship is January 1. Candidates for the Global Scholar Program are to apply by March 1 and they will be notified of a decision as soon as possible. All Global Scholar applicants will be notified of the Global Scholar admission decision by April 1.

Global Scholar applicants should write a 750-word maximum essay on the following topic: "Education and Life: A Personal Statement." This essay should include educational goals, prior experiences, creative work and honors which relate to the Global Scholar in Business.
