MEMORANDUM

TO:              School of Business Faculty

FROM:           Faculty Council

DATE:           November 6, 2003

SUBJECT:      University Faculty Awards and School of Business Faculty Awards

The purpose of this memorandum is to briefly describe the University Faculty Award and School of Business Faculty Award programs and to clarify the procedures for faculty who wish to be nominated for these awards. The University and School of Business award programs are completely separate from each other.

University Faculty Awards

Each year, at the Fall Convocation, the University honors recipients of the Distinguished Teacher Award, the Distinguished Scholar Award, the Distinguished Service Award, and the University Award of Excellence. Descriptions of these awards are available in the Faculty Handbook at http://www.vcu.edu/provost/handbook/benefits/award.html.

The Dean of the School of Business nominates faculty from the School for University-level awards. Faculty Council is not involved in these nomination decisions.

Any School of Business faculty member who is interested in being nominated for a University-level award should discuss his/her qualifications with the department chair, the Senior Associate Dean for Administration, and the Dean.

Faculty should keep in mind that the complete nomination packages for University-level awards are usually due on or about April 1. Extensive documentation is required in order to have a competitive nomination package, including testimonials and evidence from individuals outside the University. Accordingly, interested faculty should anticipate expending substantial effort in developing a nomination package and should begin discussing their potential nomination with the department chair, Associate Dean, and Dean no later than three months prior to the due date.

In addition, faculty who wish to be nominated are encouraged to consult past winners of the University awards from the School of Business (Dr. Randy Barker, Distinguished Teacher, 1998; and Dr. Subhash Narula, Distinguished Scholar, 2000) for advice on preparing a nomination package.

School of Business Awards

Each year, at the School of Business Spring Honors Reception, the School honors recipients of the Distinguished Teacher Award, the Distinguished Scholar Award, the Distinguished Service Award, and the School of Business Award of Excellence. School of Business Award Criteria are available on the Faculty Council Web Page at http://www.bus.vcu.edu/fac_resources/fac_council.htm.

The chair of each department will solicit faculty nominations openly for each of the awards, and will forward one nomination for each award to Faculty Council. Faculty Council then evaluates the nominees and decides on the recipient for each of the School of Business awards.

Faculty Council will send out a call for nominations for School of Business awards on or about December 1. Departments must submit nominations to Faculty Council no later than March 1.
