Programs
Virginia Commonwealth University offers a wide array of options
for undergraduate students and graduate students pursuing graduate
degees. Undergraduates may select from either of two options for
a BS in economics or may choose a minor
in economics. At the graduate level, we offer an MA
in economics. Students in the MBA program can also choose to concentrate
in economics. Finally, students pursuing a Ph.D. in business may
select to minor in economics. Click on the appropriate link or scroll

BS degree programs
The Department of Economics at Virginia Commonwealth University
offers a major in either the College of Humanities and Sciences
or the School of Business. Students frequently choose the major
in the College of Humanities and Sciences when they are interested
in careers in politics and public policy, law, or the news media.
Students who want to combine training in economics with exposure
to the business disciplines are encouraged to consider the major
in the School of Business. Both programs require that the student
complete general education requirements and the following economics
courses:
ECON 210-211 Principles of Economics
ECON 301 Microeconomic Theory
ECON 302 Macroeconomic Theory
ECON 307 Money and Banking
The major in the School of Business supplements these requirements
with a core of business courses (which includes ECON 303 Managerial
Economics), MGMT 301-302 Business Statistics, and 15 hours of electives
credit in economics at the 300- or 400-level. Additional requirements
for the major in the College of Humanities and Sciences include
STAT 210 Basic Practice of Statistics and 18 hours of electives
credit in economics at the 300- or 400-level.
Students considering a major in economics can also obtain helpful
information by clicking on the Students and Careers tabs on the
left of this page.
Minor in economics
Students at VCU can also minor in economics by taking six economics
courses. The six courses taken for a minor must include ECON 210-211
and either ECON 301, 302, or 303. The other three courses may be
chosen from any 300-400 level economics courses, including ECON
301, 302, and 303. An economics minor is especially useful for students
majoring in mass communications or political science.
Students in the College of Humanities and Sciences should contact
the Office of Academic Advising, 207 Hibbs Building, 900 Park Avenue,
or phone 804/828-2333 to declare their intentions to major or minor
in economics.

Studies Office, 3119 School of Business Building, Snead Hall, School of Business
