Effective date:
May 15, 2004
Last renewed:
Subject to renewal annually at the May meeting of the Ph.D. Committee
Staffing 700-level courses
1. The Department Chair makes the staffing decision ensuring
that, at a minimum, the guidelines set by the Ph.D. committee
are met.
2. The Department Chair completes the “Request
for Designation – Eligibility to Teach 700 Level
Courses and Chair Doctoral Dissertations” form for
each person teaching a 700-level course. The Department
Chair completes the form (with appropriate documents attached)
so as to document that the faculty member meets the guidelines
to teach 700-level courses.
3. The Department Chair forwards the form and the appropriate
documents to the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate
Studies. Within a two-week period of time, the The Associate
Dean will review all 700-level staffing decisions to ensure
that the guidelines have been followed. There will be a signature
line for the Associate Dean’s approval. If the Associate
Dean decides that the staffing decision does not meet the
guidelines, the Department Chair will be asked to make another
choice. If no other possible instructor is available, “one-time
exceptions” can be permitted and will be documented
and justified. Note that
A copy of the form, with all appropriate documents and signatures
will be kept by the Graduate Studies in Business office.
4. Annually, at April meeting, the Ph.D. Program Committee
will review all 700-staffing decisions for each department
to ensure that the guidelines set by the Ph.D. Committee
have been met. The Ph.D. Committee will then complete a form
for each Department Chair stating that the guidelines have
either been met or have not been met. If the PhD Committee
decides upon the latter, the Ph.D. Committee must document
the reasons for the failure to meet the guidelines. A copy
of this form will then be forwarded to the Department Chair
and to the Dean’s Office for use in the annual review
of the Department Chair.
5. At any point in this process, a negative decision can
be appealed by any party to the Ph.D. Committee, or if necessary,
to the Dean of the School of Business.
