Eligibility to Teach 700 Level Courses and Chair Doctoral Dissertations
 

Staffing 700 level courses

Department chairs are responsible for ensuring that 700 level courses are staffed according to the guidelines set by the School of Business Ph.D. Committee. Department chairs are to submit the proper documentation to the Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies at the time the staffing decision is made. The Ph.D. committee reviews the decisions annually at its final spring semester meeting. Procedural details are outlines at: http://www.bus.vcu.edu/admin/phd/staffing.html

Serving on dissertation committees

Department chairs of each member of a proposed dissertation committee are responsible for ensuring that the faculty member's qualifications satisfy the guidelines set by the School of Business Ph.D. Committee and for supplying the proper documentation. The documentation for all proposed members along with the appropriat4 forms are submitted to the Graduate STudies in Business Office. The proposed dissertation committee is then reviewed by the Ph.D. committee at its next scheduled meeting. Procedural details are outlined at: http://www.bus.vcu.edu/admin/phd/staffing2.html

Eligibility guidelines

Under the guidelines set by the School of Business Ph.D. Committee, a faculty member is eligible to teach 700 level courses or to serve on dissertation committees if one of the following sets of criteria is met:

  • Option 1. Based on at least two refereed, peer-reviewed journal articles

    Option 2. Based on other criteria

    Option 3. Currency demonstrated by conferral of an earned doctorate within the past two years.

Documentation to support eligibility

Option 1: A copy of each published or forthcoming article used to meet the eligibility requirement, along with either:

    Under Option 1a: a printout showing each article's inclusion in either the Social Science Citation Index or in the Science Citation Index.

    • Under Option1b: the documentation used to compute the article's Author Affiliation Index.

    Option 2: A detailed statement as outlined in the link to Option 2 above.
